This tutorial demonstrates how to create an animated pulsating heart. Open your choice of transparent Start Image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.
To work along, you are welcome to download a selection of Start Images
HereUnzip the file and open your choice of Start Image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.

Instructions are specific for my pulsating heart; for personal results, always experiment with different sized hearts, numbers of heart duplications and animation speeds.

Understand Layers

Double-left-click the Transparent Canvas’s upper menu bar to enlarge its workspace. In addition, if you have a Scroll Mouse, you can resize your image using the mouse’s Central Roller.

Now, right-click the heart’s Layer; and from the subsequent drop-down list, choose Duplicate. Repeat this twice more, and you will have four identical heart Layers, as illustrated below.

Activate the second Layer, as illustrated below.

Ensure the second heart Layer is active; then from the left-side Tools Toolbar, Paint Shop Pro 7 8 9 - activate the Deform/Deformation Tool . Or press your D key.

Or press your K key.

After clicking the Deform/Deformation/Pick Tool, the second heart will be surrounded by a large Vector Deformation Bounding Box.

From the Tool Options Ribbon, ensure Mode is set to Scale.

Then from the Tool Options Ribbon, change the settings to the following - or experiment

Now, activate the third heart Layer, and change the Deform/Pick’s Tools Options to the following.

Then activate the fourth heart (the bottom Layer); and alter the Tool Options to the following.

Activate the Move Tool to disable the Deform/Pick Tool’s Bounding Box.

Because you don’t have the ability to alter your heart’s size using the Deformation Tool, you need to change the second, third and fourth heart’s size by hand. Ignoring the top heart, you are looking reduce the second, third and fourth heart’s size, incrementally - (as illustrated above right) - by manipulating the tiny handles that are attached to the large Vector Deformation Bounding Box. Therefore, activate the second heart’s Layer, (in the Layers Palette), and gently tug the small top-right Deformation Handle, (that is attached to the large Deformation Bounding Box), and move it in the opposite direction; this reduces the heart’s size. As you resize the Deformation Bounding Box; (at the same time) press and keep pressed your Keyboard’s Alt Key; this resizes the Deformation Bounding Box in proportion. After you have reduced the second heart’s size; drag the heart to a central position. Then reduce the third and the fourth heart’s size in exactly the same way, and drag them to a central position. After you have completed this, you will have four heart Layers, and each heart will be a different size. You are ready for the next step.

Experiment with different Display Times, (frame speeds), and discover a look you prefer - Animation then Frame Properties .

To display the large heart for longer; right-click the large heart’s Layer, and choose Duplicate from the subsequent drop-down list.

When you are happy with your pulsating animation, it is ready to save.
